Where to stay?
As you can see from the map below, the closest town to Fort de la Prée is La Flotte. We recommend staying in either La Flotte or St Martin de Ré. There are also some good AirBnB options to the east of the fort (towards Rivedoux), but avoid getting too close to the bridge as the towns are more charming further away from the mainland.
The Options:
St Martin-de-Ré: The biggest and most lively town on the Island, St Martin is the vibrant capital of Ile de Ré. Here you will find a gorgeous harbour, many restaurants and bustling night markets. St Martin is a fortified town set within a star shaped fortress built by Vauban (Military Engineer of Louis XIV) and was made a world heritage site in 2008.
La Flotte: Closer to Fort de la Prée, La Flotte is smaller and possibly more quaint than St Martin. It has the best and most traditional food market and is a maze of narrow backstreets and old buildings, with a cute little waterfront harbour and a small handful of restaurants.
Note: If you are in the bridal party or grooms party, accomodation may be organised for you, so check before booking!
St Martin-de-Ré
There are lots of options in St Martin from AirBnB to hotel to camping. Ideally you want to try and stay within the walled city fortification as it's absolutely gorgeous, and where all the restaurants and markets are located.
